This is as good as a photo gets in your dark bedroom. Roan’s snoozing in my bed, and there’s no way in Hell I’m going to chance waking him. I think crappy photos of quilts from a distance are actually quite good in helping “see” the design anyway.
Below is my usual design, and though I like it, I’ve just done it too many times.
I probably will crash on the couch to watch cartoons with the little guy when he gets up. You can get a lot done when you for no reason what-so-ever are wide awake at 3am.
I’ve read The Stranger and filled out my city voting ballot. Ordered this delightful home decor owl fabric with Christmas presents in mind, and now that I am fully caffeinated I thought I would set us to work on the design of our Value Quilts.
That’s all we’re doing this week, because I need a break to catch-up on my quilting bees. This might provide some time for some of you to catch-up too. Head over to the Value Quilt Flickr Group, test out some designs, see what resonates.
I am curious what you think of the top design? I can’t fit all the blocks, so I’ll have to add as I go. There are a few blocks that don’t have enough contrast of light and dark, but I think I’m going for it anyway. I did place a few of the squares to make the diamonds all one color. Looking at the photo makes me see some other areas where I’ll do some more of this.
Off to look at House Blocks, not my favorite, I always feel so inadequate when I produce them.
Have a great weekend.
i really really like the diamonds. so much so that i may just jump into playing with values this way. really nice, katie!
I can’t decide which one I like better – they are both so different and so compelling. However, if I had done a previous one with the diamond pattern, like you’ve done, I would be inclined to switch it up and go with the top design. There are so many different things to try in the quilting world that I can never do the same thing twice!
The top design is more subtle, but I kind of like that.
One of my favourite things about the half square triangle is all the design possibilities.
Sheesh, I need to even start cutting my fabrics!
I, too, love the subtlety of the first layout. And it’s very helpful to me, because I’m just starting to sew mine together and have had some worries about not having enough contrast. I really love that first layout. Also, I really appreciate that some areas have less contrast than others. It reminds me of “fadeout” blocks in antique quilts. I think it’s very cool and wouldn’t change a thing! 🙂

I love your usual diamond layout, but the squares look great too.
Good luck with your houses, I’ve been struggling with mine. The first one was too big, the second one looks too plain, I think I like my third attempt. Now I’m just trying to figure out what else to do with the block – I’m not feeling very inspired atm, got any inspiration to spare? LOL 🙂
I like the top design. It’s another great example of what you can do with the contrasts. I like to just look closely at different sections to find the contrasts and patterns. I wish I had time to participate in this quilt-along! I’m going to check out the flickr group.
3 a.m.? Good thing today is gray and gloomy, you can cuddle up and have a quiet day.
I like the new design, it keeps the eye moving across the quilt. But then I like your usual design too because it’s more orderly…..and you know I like my things orderly!
Have a great weekend!!
I love that top design – it’s so pretty and different! Looks great!
I like the top design. These really just makes we want to reach in there and play with your blocks, I wonder what would happen to the top design if you put four of the darkest triangles together in a few random spots?
Wow. I love that top design, but I like the second one too. Cheryl can tell you… I’m no help. I like so much. My gut goes for the top. Seriously? 3 a.m….. you’re hurting me.
oh, I love the top design too.
I’m about halfway through sewing my HST’s. I’m behind, I know, I know.
Avoiding house blocks too. I’ll rot in hell.
Both absolutely stunning!!!
Andi 🙂
The top design is my favorite, fresh and fun. I would love to try this ….
The big diamond is also nice, but a bit more familiar.
; )
I think the top quilt is beautiful! and love the light, makes it look really old.
i do love that diamond layout. it’s so good!
I love your quilt! I made one similar to it (see my blog posting from July 18). I only used two different values, and placed all of them with the light side on the top, but I really like your placement. Love your blog–really great stuff here.
I really like your new design; wish I had seen that earlier. This past weekend, I worked on my value quilt, and have the top done (baby quilt size). I was really caught by the depression block on the values flickr group, and did my design that way, but would have loved to try your design. Waiting to quilt & bind it, so I can post pictures. I was so delighted with this process and getting those cool “color overlay” effects I’ve long admired in other quilts–I actually produced it to a small degree! It was so cool. I love that you prodded me into trying this. Thanks a bunch!
